GESI TERRACES

Right in the middle of the lost link of a green valley, hosted by three different cultures accustomed to live together, the search for an ornamental recreation as if it had been there for centuries which has been the subject to many folk songs, with its unique geography and its centuries-old Armenian Pigeon houses...

The hobby gardens which are located in section of a convex canyon approximately 1.5 km long and 100m high, are designed by considering the characteristic texture of the Gesi region Instead of building hobby gardens that are lined with fences, in order to contribute to the ecological transformation of the area, the pigeons' houses are planned to be renovated attracting people to the site and ensuring the continuity of historical knowledge.

While doing this, the idea of handling hobby gardens in harmony with the slope and texture as if they were there for centuries was the first aim of the project.

This harmony has been tried to be achieved by considering the characteristic stone workmanship of different local cultures that have lived in harmony and peace for centuries, and by considering the human scale setlement principles in their cities. It is believed that the area will complete the gap in the green valley starting all the way from Gesi to Uskubi and will contribute to cultural tourism.

Hobby Terraces in harmony with the slope and texture

MORPHOLOGY

Instead of lining the hobby terraces side by side, we positioned them to create a common space. We planted shadow-making trees with broad petals in the common area. By spreading these units across the land like a lace, we achieved a composition that harmonizes with the slope.

The Co-existence of people from different origins who have been living together for centuries is the most important element that shapes the project

The Journey

The layout of the terraces according to the existing topography creates a random, but also a rhythmic view. Each terrace exists with the help of the adjacent ones and together they acts as a whole. The spaces in between contain the staircases and circulation areas that lead up to the storage huts and the shaded common spaces. These spaces are designed as rentable, seasonal or long-term hobby gardens hosting people from all around the world.

The terraces made of stone, the local material of the region, are in harmony with the land.
