CAFERAGA SPORTS AND CULTURAL CENTER
What kind of a place are we in? Without a doubt, it is always desired that every building should melt its boundaries to establish strong bonds with the city and the public. Especially in an area where two dense streets intersect, it is a necessity to establish these relations. But how can we handle the method of creating such a relationship with the public in a larger program while the program of the existing building is smaller than the required one and yet it still forces the site boundaries? In a corner parcel surrounded by streets with such strong pedestrian movements, how do we approach the potentials that can be established between the public and the building?
What if it did not exist? Perhaps this is the question that we must ask before we create public spaces and new urban gaps while thinking of how to replace the existing structure in order to better understand the potentials of the site. How would the public behave if the Caferaga Sports Center and Baris Manco Cultural Center did not exit? Since this way of thinking is derived directly from the nature of pedestrian movements, it is inevitable that the building will form healthier relations with the city and the public. If there weren't an existing building on site, people would pass the area diagonally because it was a shortcut. This axis which cuts the area diagonally from it's highest point to the lowest, forms the main spine of our project.
This axis acts as a passage with the fragmental program layout positioned around it. Thanks to the secondary spines connecting to the main one, inner streets are formed on the ground level. The cafeteria, ateliers, offices, Health Center entrance and the Cultural Center foyer entrances are all situated around this inner street network which connects tightly with the public. The entrance to the 1000-people Sports Hall is mainly from the corner where Nailbey Street and Sakiz Street intersect as well as from these inner streets. This way, many people can easily and directly reach the Sports Hall and find themselves in the middle of these two busy streets as soon as they leave.
